EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION

Pass in 10th Std (From a Recognized Board) with Science, Mathematics, 40% in English and 40% in Aggregate as subjects

AGE LIMIT

Minimum 17.5 years
Maximum 25 years

PHYSICAL STANDARDS

Medically fit as per the standards set by M. S. Medical Examination Rules, 2000.

EYESIGHT

6/6 in each eye without visual aids. Normal colour vision. Candidates have to undergo a full eyesight test conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department before being finally selected for the course.

CURRICULUM FOR PRE-SEA TRAINING FOR G.P RATING

1) Standard Marine Navigational Vocabulary and Use of English Language
2) Knowledge of Ships and Shipping Industry
3) Contribute to Monitoring and Controlling a Safe Watch
4) Steer the Ship and Comply with Helm Orders
5) Keep a proper look out by sight and by Hearing
6) Operate Emergency Equipment and Apply Emergency Procedure
7) Survive at Sea in the Event of ship Abandonment
8) Minimise Risk of Fire, Maintain State of Readiness, Fight and Extinguish Fires
9) Take Immediate Action Upon Encountering an Accident or Other Medical Emergencies
10) Comply with Emergency Procedures, Prevent Pollution and Contribute to Effective Human Relationship on Board Ship
11) Machinery in Engine Room, Purpose, Location and Basic Working Knowledge
12) Carry out Watch Keeping Duties as Engine Room Rating
13) Safe Working Practices and Related Engine Room Operations
14) Basic Environmental Protection Procedure

This course is of 6 months duration. On successful completion of this Pre-Sea Training, the candidates will be eligible to join in Indian /Foreign Shipping companies as a Deck/Engine crew. With Further Sea -service , they be promoted as a motorman/oil man, Fitter, Deck Serang, BOSUN, Able-Bodied Seamen. They can also be promoted to Officer Level with certain service and qualification requirements.

NATURE OF JOB

Shipping is an International industry employing seafarers of different nationalities, trained to high professional standards. Merchant ships require qualified and competent personnel to man various service and systems on Board. After completing G.P. rating course a candidate can join either as a Deck rating or Engine rating.

JOB PROSPECTS

After passing out from the academy and obtaining the CDC from the Shipping Master, the candidates qualify to take up employment as seamen aboard a ship of National or international flag on their own. Due to vast increase in the sea transportation there is a potential of job opportunities for seafarers both in Indian and Foreign Shipping companies.
